I’ve seen lots of peoples “top 10″ lists for dishes they believe to be quite difficult. They do have some good points, baked alaska for example, puff pastry etc. And I have to admit there are a few dishes I would not think to make just out of the thought that they might be too difficult! I heard a radio ad today that exclaimed “Easy as pie. Except Lemon Meringue, that’s one tricky pie.” And I thought to myself, yes that is a difficult pie to make! I wouldn’t have thought to make it just for that reason alone. So I thought about a challenge. A food challenge. I thought of the top 10 dishes I wouldn’t usually make just because I was a little leary of them. So I’m going to work through my top 10 dishes that I think are tricky to tackle!
My Top Ten:
- Lemon Meringue Pie
- Chocolate Mousse
- Baked Alaska
- Jelly Roll Cake
- Cinnamon Buns/Lemon Sticky Buns
- Cream Puffs
- Banoffee Pie
- Angel Food Cake
Ok. So I made it to 8. I need to think of 2 more..
What are your hardest dishes that you’ve baked? Or what have you not baked because it seems too difficult??
Give me some more ideas! I say cinnamon buns only because I dont bake bread, and I find the whole making the dough thing difficult, as I never do it! I think yeast is tricky. But I have wanted to make them for a long time!

Definitely macarons, unless you already succeeded in making them. I tried a week ago and failed big time. Also, yeast raised doughnuts can be very tricky. They are still on my to-do list.
I used to be afraid to make yeast breads, but I tackled the Pioneer Woman’s cinnamon rolls and it turned out they were so easy (and delicious). I’ve conquered my fear of yeast! I’m a little afraid of meringue, maybe that will be next!
Tanja: I am definitely skeptical of macaroons as well!
gr: I have the pioneer womans book as well! Maybe I can get over the cinnamon bun thing soon! and I think I’ve tried meringue once!
Macarons are the only thing I can think of right now but they’re also the only thing I’ve tried, haven’t done well, and have tried again. I think I’ve tried things and gave up after the first fail but I can’t remember. I’d also include puff pastry. I’d love to eventually have the courage to try that out!
Definitely, cream puffs. Or anything else that requires a choux paste as a base!
Sharlene: Yes I’ve definitely avoided macaroons!
Michelle: Yes choux pastry looks a bit tricky for sure!!
My todo list still holds cannoli … deep frying the little shells kind of scares me. Actually, deep frying anything scares me. But boy do I love them when they’re made right. Maybe one day.
I’m patting myself on the back as I’ve made all but three of those on your list and I’ve made mousse twice, just not chocolate! :) Good luck with tackling your list…I think you’ll be fine!!
