In for the long haul

January 13, 2013

Last week was the first week back to classes since the break. I have to admit it was a little rough getting out of bed to the sound of an alarm instead of the sweet sound of “I can get up whenever I want to,” especially on those days when Adam had to get up for work and I knew I could lay in bed much longer. Now the time difference between getting up in the morning is a mere hour. I only get one whole hour longer than Adam in the morning (yes – boohoo for me.) It especially sucks on the days when Adam wakes me up when he gets up and I can’t fall back to sleep. Once I’m up, i’m usually up – unless I am realllyyyy tired.

Since moving in it has been really nice that we have more than one bathroom. Our old condo had a ‘cheater’ bathroom so it was connected to the bedroom, and it was our only bathroom. The kitchen was also right there… so the buffer zone of sounds wasn’t quite as far as I would like when it came to Adam getting ready in the morning and banging around in the kitchen – i.e. grinding his coffee beans. But now – Oh the joys of living in a house with stairs again! This means that Adam’s morning routine is a whole floor or two below me, and he uses the other bathrooms instead of having to wake me up =) I call that a win-win situation.

On another note, I was lucky enough to go to the Lady GaGa concert in box seats with a friend from school. That lady is one crazy performer – lots of crazy outfits and she can seriously sing and play musical instruments. Overall it was an awesome performance.

And now we’re back to school again. This week I start my long practicum. Four months! From the middle of January to the middle of April I will be fully immersed in Grade 2. As excited as I am to begin, I am not so excited to lose my glorious mornings of sleeping in. Especially since it’s getting quite cold outside, the mornings can be pretty frosty. I like to wake up when the sun is beaming outside, not when it is still hidden beneath the layer of darkness enveloping our house. Since I was off for a week longer than Adam, he had to return to work on the 2nd, I thought I had better bake him something to nibble on in the dark morning hours, or on the way to work, or while he was at work. We also had a very sad looking bunch of overripe bananas laying out on the counter that were just crying out to be baked into a loaf. So, here it is.

It’s my usual banana bread recipe, but this time I subbed butter for vegetable oil, and added some sour cream for good measure. I also cut down the sugar, which you don’t even notice. Since the bananas were so ripe they are already pretty sweet. But, if your bananas aren’t overly ripe you probably won’t miss the extra sugar either.

May I also suggest if you’re having this for breakfast, or perhaps a snack, it is glorious with a little almond butter smeared on top.

Banana Bread

  • 3 well ripened bananas, cut in half
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 1/2 tbs. sour cream
  • dash of cinnamon
  1. Preheat oven to 350°. Spray loaf pan with cooking spray.
  2. Whisk together thoroughly the flour, baking soda, and baking powder in bowl.
  3. In bowl, using a hand mixer (or stand) beat sugar, butter, banana and sour cream. Add in eggs one at a time.
  4. Spread evenly in pan. sprinkle top with more pumpkin seeds. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 50-60 minutes.
  5. Once finished, turn oven off and leave door open half way. Leave loaf in oven for another 10-20 mins to ensure centre is baked through.

Take A Seat

Lainey insisted on being in the photo

I told her to clean up her toys {fyi it’s a flamingo}

It’s a new year, and we have a new couch ladies and gentlemen.

Finding a couch for our new house was difficult. More difficult than I would have thought, considering it was just a couch. But, apparently it’s not just a couch. It’s probably one of the more expensive purchases for a new house, which means you have to absolutely love it and make sure it fits right/looks right in your living room. It also doesn’t help when your loving mother offers to buy you a couch as a housewarming gift, thus, she also has her input. I love you dearly mother, but I was not about to put a white leather couch in my house – sorry. However, she LOVES the cowhide. Go figure.

Yes. We have finally have a couch in our house, after much running around, including one couch that was built, and promptly returned to IKEA.

*Phew*

Not loving the whole ‘one chair’ thing haha

Adam and I had known pretty much since we bought the new house that we wanted a sectional. We didn’t exactly have a couch from the old condo that we could just bring over to the new house because it was a hand-me-down small black faux leather sofa from my brother that had tape over tears under the arms on each side.

I’ve always loved the look of a sectional, with a super cozy corner to snuggle up in, plus I love things at right angles. I have a thing about everything being squared off. I’m kind of a freak when it comes to stuff like that. There are not many things that are ’rounded’ in our house. So far the couch, table, coffee table and night stands are all square/rectangle. Just call me ‘square.’

Our couch hunt took several months. We probably visited every furniture store in the lower mainland and beyond. We just could not find the exact couch we had in mind. Adam likes to tell me I have a picture in my mind of things that don’t actually exist when it comes to decorating this house. Adam really only had one condition, the sectional had to be long enough so that his 6’3 stature could comfortably lay on it without his feet going over the edge.

I knew exactly what type of couch I wanted. At least, I thought I did. I originally wanted a grey cloth sectional. I wanted cloth since the beginning, but my wise mother told me I should get leather. I was totally against leather for some reason – I just wanted grey to match all my other neutral colours. And, I wasn’t about to get a grey leather couch. She kindly suggested a White leather couch, which I was not so keen about.

And then, I finally came around to the idea of a Leather couch instead of a fabric one. Another motherly advice tip was that leather would definitely last longer than fabric over the years of wear and tear. She was probably right on that one, I have to admit. I wasn’t sure the type of leather I wanted, but once again I knew what I did not want. I did not want a typical chocolate brown or a black leather couch. Although I almost gave up and bought a dang dark leather couch.

Our teak side tables which double as a coffee table for now – Adam is re-finishing our coffee table (tba!)

But –  I wanted something different, something modern and lighter in colour. I knew as soon as I saw THIS post on one of my favourite home decor + diy blogs, House Tweaking, that it was the colour I wanted. It existed! Much to Adam’s happiness.

Love the detail in the leather of our couch, gives it a little character

Super comfy corner piece – check!

sewn in back and bottom cushions mean no moving around!

So we searched, this time for a cognac – cigar smoking – supple – weathered looking genuine leather sectional. Could it exist!?

The search began in the summer, and ended on December 23 – Merry Christmas to us! The couch was found, approved by mom (finally, thank god 😉 ), and bought all within 24 hours at Scan Designs in Coquitlam. It was truly a perfect fit, we wanted it to be 10′ one way, and 8′ the other, and this couch was 9 1/2 feet by 7 1/2 feet, in the exact place we needed it. We had never visited Scan Designs before, which is crazy because we had visited The Brick right around the corner from the long road of furniture stores that is United Boulevard – where we spent four hours visiting tons of furniture stores that afternoon by the way.

9 1/2 feet on the back, 7 1/2 feet on the side

A big thanks to Mom for the housewarming gift, and  so ends the great couch search of 2012.

It’s comfy, It fits, It’s gorgeous. It’s staying.

New Years Eve

Two Thousand Twelve

December 31, 2012

2012 has been an exceptional year for many reasons.

There was excitement of welcoming new members to the family (especially our little niece),  Adam and  I buying a new house, graduating from university with my B.A, getting accepted into PDP for teaching, travelling all over Europe for a month during the summer and visiting where my father was born in Italy with my Nonna, teaching grade 2, and finally ending the year moving into our new house where we are going to celebrate New Year’s Eve tonight with family. What a whirlwind!

Yes, 2012 certainly was full of new and exciting adventures for us. Of course it was not all smooth, there were tears and loss along the way. However, that is the great part about starting a New Year. You have the opportunity to leave the past behind us and start anew. I don’t know what 2013 will bring with it, what surprises or loss I may encounter but I can say that I am ready for it, and excited for the year ahead. I have a feeling it will be a great one.

With another year ending, I thought I would look back at 2012. These are some recipes and stories that happened this year (click on description to jump to post)
